Product Description:
The African Animals Sculpture Set includes two handmade wooden sculptures and a traditional Maasai beaded necklace from a Kenyan artisan. The artisan makes these wood carvings to document real-life events in the animal kingdom and uses a special tree called the Mpingo tree. This is an indigenous hardwood tree whose inner part is dark while the outer part is light in color. When skillfully carved, it brings out interesting contrasts. Some of the natural events that the artisan carves include lactating mothers, hunting leopards, antelope stampedes, and the wildebeest migration.
The artisan who made the beaded necklace makes these colorful necklaces out of several rounds of carefully selected beads of different colors and sizes with a leather lining. The beauty of these beads is that they tell a story about the Maasai and of the individual person wearing them. Bead colors are symbolic in Maasai culture. Red beads signify blood, bravery, and unity. White represents health, peace, and purity. Blue ones, the color of the sky, represent energy, and green is the color of grass, which signifies land and production. As such, the necklaces carry special meanings and may at times denote social status.
Kindly Note: Please allow for slight variations in size, shape, and finish/color since this is a handmade craft.
