Description

These stunning handmade nesting baskets, also known as “Peace Baskets,” represent the essence of traditional Rwandan craft. Woven by skilled artisans using sisal fibre wrapped around a sturdy papyrus frame, these baskets are both beautiful and functional.

After the Rwandan genocide, weavers from different ethnic groups came together, and the baskets took on the name “Peace Baskets,” symbolizing unity and healing. Today, these baskets are internationally recognised as one of Rwanda’s finest handmade products.

💡 Craft Story: This nesting basket set is handmade by a group of 12 women, all of whom are widows and orphans who survived the Rwandan genocide. After enduring unimaginable loss, these women came together in 1996 to form a weaving collective as a way to rebuild their lives. Today, their skills and artistry have enabled them to provide for their families, purchase homes, and send their children to school. Each basket you purchase supports their journey toward hope and self-sufficiency.
